Schneider Haus National Historic Site and the Region of Waterloo Library have been awarded a grant in the amount of $5,086 from the Seniors Community Grant Program through the Ontario Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility.

“This project, Making Connections, is a partnership between Schneider Haus National Historic Site and the Region of Waterloo Library. The goal of Making Connections is to offer outreach programming for seniors living in the Region’s four rural townships in an effort to reduce their social isolation by facilitating their active participation within the community,” said Antoinette Duplessis, Historic Sites Supervisor for Schneider Haus National Historic Site.

The program, in Partnership with the Region of Waterloo Library, started in October and will continue until March 2020. Current research clearly indicates that socially isolated seniors are more at risk for negative health, loneliness and other ill effects to their psychological and cognitive health.

“Museum and library staff will work with community organizations and foster collaborations where possible. Staff will facilitate outings, activities, talks and networking opportunities to connect seniors to each other and provide opportunities for them to engage in conversations and settings that will ultimately enhance their quality of life and lessen their social isolation,” said Kim Krueger-Kischak, Supervisor, Programs and Outreach for the Region of Waterloo Library.

“I am inspired by the commitment and dedication of these two organizations that are making a positive difference in the lives of seniors and their families in Waterloo Region,” said Raymond Cho, Minister for Seniors and Accessibility. “Bringing seniors together to take part in meaningful initiatives in their community will help them be active and socially connected, while also having a positive benefit on their overall well-being.”
