Waterloo looks to stop tailgate parties before they start

Waterloo City Council does not want any tailgate parties at any city-owned facilities.
This after the provincial government loosened the laws to allow alcohol in parking lots of such places like sporting events.
City council believes there's a fear that fans might either drink too much, encourage youth drinking and then be belligerent at public events.
Waterloo Mayor Dave Jaworksy tells The Mike Farwell Show on 570 NEWS there's a focus in Waterloo right now when it comes to public drinking.
“We are dealing with the Ezra Avenue party, where people are drinking in the streets. It would really seem inconsistent to say that we're trying to get rid of students drinking in the streets, yet you know what, if someone wants to apply for it, people can tailgate in perhaps Waterloo Park.”
Jaworksy says they may look at the policy again in five years time.
“We might in the future, but for now my focus now is eliminating the St. Patrick's Day party or reorienting the kids at the party.”
Meanwhile, Wilfrid Laurier University and University of Waterloo have already disallowed tailgate parties on their property.
