Guelph Humane Society (GHS) says six juvenile domestic lion head rabbits are receiving veterinary care after they were found abandoned behind a store in Rockwood, Ont.
An Animal Services Officer responded to a call from a person who found the young rabbits behind the Foodland located at 209 Alma St.
Katherine Leonard, senior manager of community services at GHS, said domestic rabbits are often mistaken to have the same survival instincts as their wild counterparts, an “unfortunate” misconception.
“If these young ones were left where they were found, they would have succumbed to disease or predators,” she said. “We are grateful to the kind member of the public who reached out to ensure they could get access to the care they need.”
GHS said the rabbits appear to be between four and seven months old. They have been assessed and will require veterinary care for neglect, they say.
the humane society is encouraging anyone who may have information about the incident to report it to the Provincial Animal Welfare Service (PAWS) at 1-833-926-4625.
