For many generations of students from the University of Waterloo, the Bombshelter pub was an iconic part of their student experience.
After almost 40 years of service, its doors are now closing to make way for a new project.
Vice President of Operations and Finance at the University of Waterloo's Student Union, Kurt MacMillan, tells The Mike Farwell Show on 570 NEWS that there has been a lot of construction going on in and around the pub for an expansion project.
“This will be a great opportunity to make some renovations and a new vision for the space.”
He says the student union will be surveying students to find out what they would like to see instead of the pub.
“Ideally it will still be a student beverage concept and just give it that facelift and make it fresh for students.”
He says it is about time for a change.
“In the last five years, it's been a million dollars in losses and with my position now, with the federation of students, we have to look at what is the most financially responsible.”
MacMillan adds that it might take a while for the space to reopen to students.
“Ideally, we will start the consultation in January, get some students to give us their feedback and ideas and hopefully begin the renovation project shorty after. So I'm looking at March moving forward, but it really depends on how the consultation goes first.”
The last Bomber Wednesday will be on January 9.
New Years' will be celebrated with New Year’s Eve on January 16.
Renovations are expected to officially begin in 2019.
