Months of speculation will be laid to rest at Kitchener council tonight as the Rangers reveal for the first time that a renovation and expansion of the Memorial Auditorium is possible. The team has long been interested in a larger arena to meet a growing demand for tickets but it was initially believed the venue would have to be built elsewhere in the city. However, the Rangers now have an engineering report that shows it is possible to expand the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium on East Avenue.
In the team’s annual update to the community tonight at council, Rangers COO Steve Bienkowski will share two options for expansion with council. One option is to build a bigger arena but the second shows the results of the engineering report explaining how an expansion could be accomplished. Tonight’s presentation will include a virtual tour of what an expanded Kitchener Memorial Auditorium would look like.
Bienkowski tells 570 News the team has no preferred option and costs are yet to be determined for both options. However, it would be considerably less expensive to expand the existing arena than it would be to build a new one.
Kitchener mayor Carl Zehr admits to being questioned often about a new home for the Rangers, telling 570 News he’s looking forward to the details of tonight’s presentation.
