A dry summer affects local pumpkin harvests

If you wait too long to pick up your Thanksgiving or Halloween pumpkin, you could be out of luck.
Like fall colours on leaves, the hot summer has also affected local pumpkin harvests. As a result of the weather, the number of pumpkins at area farms are taking a hit.
Owen Smelski is one of the owners of the Smelski Pumpkin Farm in Shakespeare, Ontario. He tells 570 News size matters when farming pumpkins. “The weather in June and July has affected the crops. There’s probably a lot less pumpkins out there than typical years. When you pick up your pumpkin, you’ll see the size of it shrink significantly because there wasn’t as much rain and moisture this summer.”
Smelski adds that their pie pumpkins; the ones you use for cooking and baking will be just as sweet as prior years.
The best pumpkin to pick up for your Jack-O-Lantern? Smelski recommends “The Wolf” variety because of its round figure and large handle.
