Second corduroy road found in Waterloo

Did you miss out on your piece of corduroy road this morning? You might be in luck!

A second corduroy road has been found near Conestoga Mall, this stretch only measuring about 8 metres.

ION workers have found logs in construction work in front of the Kelsey’s, similar to the logs found under King Street in Uptown Waterloo.

Avril Fiskin with GrandLinq says this is the only area with a corduroy in the Conestoga Mall area, “We understand that there is no corduroy road south of the discovery because we have already excavated in that area and we did not find anything.” Said Fiskin.

Kimberly Moser with ION Community Relations says in a statement to 570 News “as per the requirements of both the Project Agreement and the Ontario Heritage Act, GrandLinq has stopped work in this area and an investigation is underway.”

GrandLinq’s Environmental Department engaged the same licensed archaeologists who led the investigation of the corduroy road in Uptown Waterloo on King Street and they confirmed that this is another corduroy road.

The Lead Archeologist notified the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport and obtained permission to proceed with documenting the discovery.

There is no immediate impact to the flow of traffic, vehicles can still travel in both directions.

Work will continue in the area once clearance has been received in writing from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport that it meets the requirements of the Ontario Heritage Act.

It is also unclear if any of the pieces from this section of corduroy road will be available to the public.
