Waterloo man to run 750 km for mental health

A Waterloo man is going to put a lot of kilometres on his sneakers later this summer.

For the second straight year, Clay Williams will run 750 km in eastern Ontario to raise awareness and funds for mental health.

Williams tells 570 News it was around the time that actor Robin Williams took his life that he decided to put the run together: “My two oldest brothers had committed suicide. My wife, daughter and my sister all suffer from depression…”

He plans to start the Canal Pursuit on September 11th. The route will take him along the Trent Severn Canal and Rideau Canal.

His goal is to raise $15,000 for the Mood Disorders Society of Canada.

Williams started training in November, but adds the height of that will come in August. He’ll likely be doing 50 km runs on Saturday and Sunday by then.

“If you see a guy around the north end of Waterloo on a Sunday afternoon, it’s probably me.” added Williams.

During the 2015 Canal Pursuit, Williams averaged about 90 km each day.
