WCI students launch fundraiser for Syrian refugees

A group of local high school students are doing their part to help with the resettlement of Syrian refugees in Waterloo Region.
Students at Waterloo Collegiate Institute have launched a 30-day fundraising campaign.
The goal is $30,000.
WCI Principal Jennifer Shortreed told 570 news about the initiative.
“We’re working alongside the Calvary United Church in St. Jacobs and the MCC to bring a family over from Syria. With our school focus and the number of ESL students that we have, it just seemed like we could do more than just raise money– and that we could be a full partner in resettling a family.”
Shortreed said they aren’t just asking for cash donations either.
“Although the primary thing we need up front is money– there’s lots of ways to get involved. We have an in-kind donation page on our website, that shows people what kinds of household items we need. These types of things can be very practical things– like housing. People don’t have to offer physical items, it can be services as well.”
