Kitchener’s environmental fund up for discussion

The city of Kitchener is being urged by one local group to purchase Hidden Valley.
Public meetings will now take place to gather input as to how the city should spend the local environmental fund.
The Friends of Hidden Valley know how they’d like the city to spend the money.
According to today’s Record, in the next few years, the local Environmental Fund will have $3.5 million and spokesperson for the group, Gordon Nicholls says $1.9 million of that should be used to purchase Hidden Valley.
Nicholls tells the Record he thought the whole point of the fund was to finance the purchase of new parklands and natural areas.
The only possible kink in the plan is the land is currently owned by realtor Peter Benninger and a spokesperson for him says the future of the land depends on the extension of River Road.
No word when public meetings will start up, but the city is expected to revisit the issue in May.
