The leader of a violent group known in Waterloo region as “The Family” wants to appeal his 14-year sentence for a series of crimes related to his drug-dealing activities.
Paul McGraw’s appeal is to go before the Ontario Court of Appeal on Wednesday.
McGraw’s lawyer, Edward Greenspan, says in court filings that no reasons were provided for imposing the sentence.
The judge issued the sentence after McGraw pleaded guilty to a number of counts including kidnapping, assault, extortion, break and enter and obstruction of justice.
The sentence matched what had been suggested to the court jointly by the Crown and McGraw’s trial lawyer.
The Crown is urging the Court of Appeal to uphold the sentence, arguing it’s the sentence his counsel recommended.
