Region moves to study data centre impacts, concerns

The Region of Waterloo is taking a deep dive into data centres.
Regional Councillors unanimously moved to have a staff report issued on the impacts data centre development could have on the local economy and environment.
That report would come back to councillors early next year.
It would also include ways to keep data centre developers accountable and transparent when it comes to reporting on energy use, water use, cooling systems and impacts on the environment.
Councillors also unanimously added to the motion brought forward by Regional Councillor Colleen James, looking for a more thorough report on data centre impacts on groundwater, source water, stormwater, wastewater, air quality, noise, spills and hazardous materials.
Engaging with local First Nations and Indigenous communities, and how data centres could impact traditional lands and culturally significant areas, was also added to the original motion.
Regional Chair Karen Redman noted this was a very timely and positive motion to be brought to the table.
“This kind of work, this kind of data will make our lobbying efforts more focused as we go to have conversations with the province and with the federal government,” said Redman.
“I think data centres are here to stay. I think all of these regulatory questions need to be addressed and answered. This will help form more instructive lobbying efforts and better policy as we go forward.”
The motion will now go to Regional Council for official approval.
