New Guelph to Goderich pedestrian bridge needs to dip into reserve fund

Plans for a new bridge across the Conestogo River could be made real if Region of Waterloo councillors are willing to spend money from a reserve for some of the $8.2-million project.

A staff report coming to a committee meeting on Tuesday will recommend a two-span trestle bridge design for the Guelph to Goderich Pedestrian Bridge.

It would go up between Powell Road and Line 86, near Wallenstein on the Kissing Bridge Trailway.

According to the description of the project on EngageWR, there is a gap on this trail at the crossing of the Conestogo because the original railway bridge was removed when the railway line was closed.

It said, “This proposed pedestrian and cyclist bridge will close the gap on this trail, improving the trail continuity and user experience.”

The bulk of the construction cost for the G2G bridge is already covered thanks to two unidentified individuals coming forward with donations of $3 million and $2.5 million.

Between that and the money already budgeted for the project, there’s still a budget shortfall, and the report said: “staff are recommending that the funding gap of $1,200,000 be funded from the General Tax Supported Capital Reserve.”

The project and design will be discussed at the Sustainability, Infrastructure, and Development committee, starting at 9:00 Tuesday morning.
