It wasn’t too long ago when you would have to line up along Weber Street in Waterloo if you wanted to enjoy Sonny’s famous fish and chips on Good Friday.
The original location closed in 2022 when owner Paul Noussis sold the building. The tradition was all but dead until Noussis found himself in conversation with Jay Taylor, the owner of Morty’s Pub on King Street.
Noussis and Taylor were guests on The Mike Farwell Show, where Taylor described how that conversation went.
“We met, we chatted about some other stuff, some commonalities we shared and we came up with this idea: Why don’t we just continue this tradition at Morty’s? We’ll work together with our staff and your guidance to make the fish and chips exactly how you made it before.”
Now entering it’s third year, Noussis said the Morty’s Pub and Sonny’s Good Friday collaboration is as popular as ever.
“People are messaging me all the time, ‘When are you guys taking orders?’, ‘What time can I come pick it up?’ Which Jay and his team have taken care of. I just make the fish, I just do the good part of it, right? They take care of all the logistics of everything else; I just take care of the fish. It’s been a good partnership, let’s just say that. It’s been great.”
As they have in the past, orders are being accepted online in an effort to avoid long lines.
People will be able to select the time they wish to pick up the order, but there is a limited number per 15-minute time slot. Some slots are full, and others are filling fast.
Noussis said they expect to be very busy and plans to prep 700 pounds of fish.
