Crews called to two fires in Kitchener Tuesday, two hurt

It was a busy Tuesday for Kitchener Fire crews with both a house and apartment fire on different ends of the city.
Just before 5 p.m., a house fire call came in on Oldfield Drive near Ottawa Street North and Lackner Boulevard. Around $300,000 in damage was done to the building, with reports that the fire started in the attached garage of a single-family detached backsplit home.
Before crews could extinguish the blaze, the flames spread into the attic as well.
Two people were hurt, with minor burns and smoke inhalation. One was sent to hospital as a precaution.
The fire is not being treated as suspicious.
Just over an hour later, around 6:15 p.m., crews were sent out to downtown Kitchener on King Street West.
An apartment fire on King between Queen and Ontario streets led to closures Tuesday evening as crews needed to ventilate the building due to the heavy smoke.
Six people living in the three-storey building had to be evacuated, with one person now displaced.
Officials said the fire was contained to one unit, and was deemed accidental, and is not being considered suspicious.
There was no structural damage to the building, with damage estimated at $50,000.
