Lockdown at women’s prison in Kitchener

A lockdown remains in effect at the women’s prison in Kitchener.

On Sunday, Correctional Service Canada announced that the Grand Valley Institution for Women was placed in lockdown.

A release said the directive was given, “To ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff, and inmates.”

In an email to 570 NewsRadio a spokesperson for Correctional Services of Canada said, “Lockdowns are implemented when there is a clear danger to the safety and security of an institution, staff members, offenders, or to the public. In this case, the lockdown was implemented to resolve a security-related workplace health and safety issue. While I have no current indication of when normal institutional operations will resume, I can share that we will post another news release as soon as the lockdown has been lifted.”

Visitation remained suspended Monday as the lockdown continued.
