Caribana Ignite returns to downtown Kitchener this summer

It’s quickly becoming one of the “do not miss” events on the calendar.

The organizers of Caribana Ignite Kitchener say the festival will return for a third year, bringing the energy of Carnival to the streets of downtown Kitchener.

Over 18,000 people attended last year, and organizers believe this year will be even bigger and certainly better.

Geraldine Stafford, Festival Director, Caribana Ignite Kitchener, told 570 NewsRadio that those in attendance will definitely see something unique.

“Well, we wanted to be bigger and better, and I think every year we’re trying to bring more cultural elements into the planning. So, this year the big thing is we’ll be having custom costumes just for Kitchener Waterloo that won’t be worn anywhere else.”

Stafford went on to say the unique costumes will have a theme that is very Waterloo Region.

“The great thing about the costumes we’re designing, they pay homage to this area being the tech sector. So, they are very futuristic and techy. We’re hoping to get a sponsor like Google or Communitech to help out.”

Stafford said don’t worry if you don’t have a new costume. They are fully embracing the “re-wine” ethos, allowing participants to wear costumes that have made appearances at other festivals.

An open invitation has been issued to mas bands, section leaders, new or seasoned revellers, Big Mas creators and performers. Registration is required; the deadline is April 30.

Organizers say round-trip transportation will be provided from Toronto, London and Hamilton, based on availability.

Caribana Ignite Kitchener goes Aug. 21 and 22.
