Fatal crashes in Waterloo region saw a sharp increase in 2025

There was an increase in life-taking crashes on regional roads last year, and the Waterloo Regional Police Service puts most of the blame on the “fatal four.”

A report to the police services board said there were 19 such crashes last year, resulting in 20 deaths.

That was a 26 percent increase from the year before.

Officials said about a quarter of the fatal crashes were due to what’s known as the “fatal four”: impaired driving, distracted driving, speeding, and not wearing a seat belt.

More than half of the fatal crashes in 2025 happened on a rural roadway.

The report also pointed out that there was a 27 percent decrease last year in major injury collisions.

Altogether, regional police laid 22,435 road safety charges.
