Kitchener ‘skyscraper’ up for heritage designation

At one time, 305 King St. W. was the tallest building in Kitchener, and though it may not be the most beautiful building or built with master craftsmanship, its place in history could make it a part of the city’s heritage.

At least that’s the opinion of the heritage committee, which moved the building for heritage designation at Kitchener council.

Built in the 1960s, and standing 12 storeys high, it was marketed as an early purpose-built office building.

Back in those days, the first four floors were occupied by the Waterloo Trust and Savings Company, which had the slogan “tall on service.”

Eventually, it would be home to 570 Newsradio and the Rogers Kitchener Radio Group before the station moved to The Boardwalk.

The committee unanimously pushed this building through to council for heritage designation approvals, that’s coming up at a meeting on March 3.
