Waterloo regional police searched a public school in Kitchener on Monday following a reported bomb threat.
Initially, police said they were on scene in the area of Courtland Avenue Public School for an unspecified investigation.
Police later confirmed the investigation related to a reported bomb threat at the Grade 7 and 8 school, home to just over 200 students.
In a statement to 570 NewsRadio, Scott Miller, Director of Education, said the message was immediately reported to police who responded to the school.
“Out of an abundance of caution, students and staff were evacuated from the school while the WRPS investigation took place,” Miller said.
As part of their investigation, officers searched the building, which was completed around 2 p.m.
“There are no immediate threats to the school or public safety,” reads a social media post from the Waterloo Regional Police Service.
A few police officers remained at the scene and no further details were immediately provided. The investigation into the alleged threat continued into Tuesday.
“In these circumstances the priority is always to ensure that WRDSB schools remain a safe place where students and staff experience a caring learning environment that addresses their well-being,” Miller said.
