Petition calling for new safety measures at Galt intersection

Concerned neighbours in Galt are raising the alarm over the number of collisions at one intersection with a new petition.

The intersection in question is at St. Andrew’s Street and Grand Ridge Drive. Over the last several years, multiple collisions have happened, including this summer involving two vehicles.

Cassandra Vedder is the organizer of the petition and has lived on St. Andrew’s Street for the last 10 years. Speaking on The Mike Farwell Show on Monday, she said while the posted speed in the area is 50km/h, drivers will go much faster coming in and going out of the neighbourhood.

“When you have people going out into the country a lot of the time they are still speeding up, still in the 50 zone,” said Vedder. “Then, you have the opposite coming in where people are going 80 km/h coming in, and by the time they come in they’re not going 50 km/hr.”

She adds that her small children, including three children, have had to take precautions.

“We have multiple locks on our front door to make sure that they aren’t getting out without a grown-up and we discourage playing in the front yard because of the speeds,” said Vedder.

Some of the improvements neighbours would like to see include a possible four-way stop, some traffic lights or even some more signage.

Over the last year, Vedder has even reached out to the city’s non-emergency police line to get more presence.

Since the petition has launched, it has amassed over 420 signatures. Vedder hopes the petition will help speed up the process before another collision occurs, or before someone is killed.
