CHL confirms ‘no conflict of interest’ in 2027 Memorial Cup selection

The Canadian Hockey League confirmed that the Kitchener Rangers shared concerns about the bid process for the 2027 Memorial Cup.

Guelph was announced as the host for the annual hockey tournament in November, winning the bid over the other finalist: the Kitchener Rangers.

The Royal City was selected after a vote from five independent experts in hockey and event operations, a vote that went 4-1 in Guelph’s favour according to the CHL.

One of the panellists was Dean McIntosh, a senior vice-president of revenue and fan experiences for Hockey Canada.

On Nov. 27, Hockey Canada announced a three-year partnership with Sleeman Breweries, a company founded in Guelph, and the namesake of the Sleeman Centre, the stadium where the Guelph Storm play.

“For the 2027 Memorial Cup, all established procedures were followed,” said a representative for the CHL in a statement to 570 NewsRadio. “We can state unequivocally that there was no conflict of interest, and we have full confidence in both the independence and expertise of the site selection committee.”

The CHL added that there is no formal appeal process for the Memorial Cup host selection and that the decision to host the tournament in Guelph is final.
