Baseball-themed sculpture to be installed at Kitchener park

October baseball is taking over in Canada, and in Kitchener council chambers.

Councillors have passed an $80,000 plan to install a baseball-themed steel sculpture in Upper Canada Park in the city’s Pioneer Park neighbourhood.

“The Seams” is designed by Javid Jah and Alex Akbari of JAH Qube Studio.

It’s a seven-foot diameter piece that uses 275 triangle-shaped ‘stitches’ to imitate the seams of a baseball.

“The idea is a sculpture that unequivocally speaks to the culture of baseball yet remains open and provocative for those meandering through the park,” reads a report to councillors.

The artists will now spend the next six months bringing the sculpture to life, with the hopes of having it installed by spring 2026, just in time for the new baseball season.

That $80,000 breaks down to $60,000 coming from the park improvement budget, plus $17,000-$20,000 in administrative and artist selection costs.
