The City of Cambridge is postponing the grand opening of the Preston Memorial Auditorium because of construction delays.
“Construction projects of this scale can often experience unforeseen challenges, and the city is committed to ensuring the site is fully operational and ready for public use before holding the official opening event,” reads a release from the municipality.
The statement goes on to say staff are working closely with user groups to ensure the facility meets the needs of those who intend to use it.
“While we are eager to celebrate this outstanding new space with the community, our first priority is to deliver a completed facility that will serve residents for many years to come,” said Cambridge Mayor Jan Liggett.
Any groups that had programming scheduled for October will be contacted by City staff who will do their best find alternative solutions until the facility is completed.
The $33.1 million revitalization of the Preston Memorial Auditorium began in the fall of 2023. The new features include: a new NHL-sized rink, new washrooms and change rooms, updated seating and more.
A make-up date for the Grand Opening has not been set. The city says that it will be determined once occupancy permits are put in place.
However, for those who planed on attending the Grand Opening on Saturday, Sept. 27, are instead invited to the Cambridge Rivulettes home opener at the Galt Arena at 3 p.m.
The Cambridge Redhawks take the ice at 7 p.m. Admission does apply.
