A multi-day heat warning that was in effect across much of southern Ontario has officially ended for Waterloo Region.
The warning was issued by Environment Canada on Friday, Aug. 8, and lasted throughout the weekend, pushing into the early work week. It was officially ended early on Aug. 13.
Throughout the stretch, daytime highs averaged in the mid-30s, with humidex values bringing that up to 40 C at times.
According to 570’s Weather Specialist Allister Aalders, the temperatures surpassed the 30 C mark 10 times throughout July, well above the 30-year average of four days.
Additionally, last year, July only provided two days where the thermometer climbed above 30 C.
Burn bans still in effect
A temporary fire ban is still in effect across the region, even though the heat warning ended.
As of 4:00 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, backyard fires and open burns are not allowed in Kitchener or Cambridge.
Waterloo already doesn’t allow backyard fires, and local townships have already issued a joint open-air burn ban. Breaking the fire bans could result in fines and charges.
