With August now in full swing, the Kitchener Panthers are getting ready for their final stretch of games before the regular season officially comes to a close.
Seven games remain for the local baseball team, with players, management, and fans alike beginning to look ahead to the upcoming postseason.
“We’ve seen a lot better baseball over the past three weeks, and these teams that we’re going to see are all at the top of the league,” Shanif Hirani, Co-Owner and General Manager, said. “It’s going to be great for us to compete with them and get us ready for the playoffs and show what we can do.”
The Panthers have two games scheduled for the weekend. They will kick things off on the road in Chatham-Kent, taking the field against the Barnstormers.
Chatham-Kent recently went through some changes on its managerial side, with Field Manager Gil Rondon parting ways after five months in the position. The team announced that General Manager Harry Muir will take on the role for the remainder of the season.
“What we need to do is focus on what we need to get done. Historically, I don’t know if it’s actually a trend, but once teams let go of their manager, sometimes those players rally around each other and take off,” Hirani said. “We need to make sure we’re ready to play, and it should be a good game.”
On Sunday, the Panthers return home for a game against the visiting Barrie Baycats. The first 300 fans attending the ball park will walk away with team beer koozies.
Hirani said there’s really been no better time to come out to Jack Couch Park to support the local team.
“We’ve had an up-and-down year, but it’s great baseball,” he said. “We have former professional players, have players from all around the world. It’s a great, great game to watch, very high level.”
Game time is at 7 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. at home on Sunday.
Tickets can be purchased right at the gate at Jack Couch Park in Kitchener or directly from the Kitchener Panthers website.
