A new deeply affordable housing project has been given the greenlight in Guelph, and a Kitchener not-for-profit organization will be behind it.
The City of Guelph announced it will be working with Kitchener-based Thresholds Homes and Supports (THS) for the 13 unit housing project at 14 Edinburgh Rd. S.
Those units will be specifically for seniors living with mental health issues.
On its website THS describes itself as a group that already helps more than 1,200 people in Waterloo Region and Guelph offering “a range of mental health and addiction services, supportive housing, Crisis Respite, individualized support programs, and more.”
One of the unique features of this project is that it will be deeply affordable. That means rent will be around $500 a month.
Nearly half an acre of Guelph-owned land and up to $1.5 million in federal cash through the Housing Accelerator Fund is being put aside for the three-storey building.
“The homes at 14 Edinburgh will address a core community need while allowing its residents to contribute to a healthy neighbourhood,” said Eric Philip, chief executive officer of Thresholds Homes and Supports.
Although a firm schedule isn’t yet in place, those homes are set to be move in ready by 2027, with construction to begin next year.
