Kitchener breaks ground on multi-million dollar community centre expansion

Several dignitaries were on hand for the official ground breaking ceremony of the expansion to the Mill Courtland Community Centre.

Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic was present during the event and spoke with 570 NewsRadio on how this expansion will impact the community.

“This is obviously a very busy community centre, one that has a long history in the city of Kitchener, with three active neighbourhood associations,” he said. “The additional space, as well as the accessibility enhancements to the building, are probably the two things that are going to provide the biggest impact to the community.”

The expansion, pegged at a cost of five million dollars, will include the addition of a 2,700 square foot multi-purpose program room, a new recording studio, basketball court, upgraded accessible parking spaces and new universal washrooms.

One million dollars of that cost is being funded by the federal government through the Canada Community-Building Fund.

Kitchener-Conestoga MP Tim Louis told 570 NewsRadio he believes it is an important example of what can be achieved through multi-level government partnerships.

“People need places to gather, to grow, to come together,” he said. “I think that it’s important, that as a community grows, the community centres and the infrastructure grows around it. Working in partnership is a way to make sure that happens.”

During construction, most of the programs currently offered at the community centre will be available at the Rockway Mennonite Church.

Work on the expansion is expected to continue through to the end of 2026.

More information on the project can be found on it’s Engage Waterloo Region page.
