Kitten found abandoned on side of the road in heat wave

He’s fighting but still has a long road to recovery a head.

Small Fry is a four-week-old kitten who was found last weekend in the middle of a heat wave, abandoned on the side of the road in Wellington County.

Temperatures at the time were above 30 C, feeling closer to 40 C when factoring in the humidex.

A passerby saw the tiny kitten covered in parasites, unable to move and struggling to survive.

They rushed him to the Guelph Humane Society (GHS).

GHS workers named the kitten Small Fry.

At the time he was not only very sick but incredibly weak from dehydration.

“Our team was ready to act fast when he arrived as the longer the parasites stayed on his body the more his life was in jeopardy,” GHS said.

“He received immediate specialized medication and care to manually remove the parasites that were infecting him, gentle handling to nurse his wounds, and a safe, quiet space to rest.”

He almost didn’t make it through the weekend.

Today, GHS is looking for help in raising funds to support the care for the young animal.

He may need surgery to remove a very badly infected eye.

Details on how to support Small Fry and other animals in the Guelph Humane Society’s care can be found here.
