Future hospital gets another multi-million-dollar boost from province

The Ontario government announced additional funding for the future Waterloo Regional Health Network (WRHN) hospital, which will help plan the launch and build of the site.

According to the province, it is adding another $10 million specifically to support the planning and construction of the hospital set to be built on the University of Waterloo campus. The government said that once completed, it will connect more patients and families in the region to high-quality care.

“As one of the fastest-growing communities in Ontario, we need a health-care system that can keep pace with our growth,” said MPP Mike Harris, Kitchener-Conestoga. “This investment in a brand-new innovative hospital right here in Waterloo will expand access to emergency care, specialized services, and critical infrastructure for families across our region.”

This is on top of a previous investment of $5 million and can allow the health network to plan and build an acute care hospital.

The funds aid the people behind the project to keep moving on submissions and get into construction as soon as possible, WRHN VP of development, Cliff Harvey, previously told CityNews.

Harvey said the way the development of the project has been structured optimizes provincial investments to ensure the construction timeline is maintained.

When the Waterloo facility is completed, WRHN will maintain three hospital sites, Midtown (formerly Grand River) and Chicopee (formerly Freeport), along with several outpatient offices, clinics and other services.

WRHN Waterloo is expected to be completed by 2035.
