It’s a big reminder from Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) that, when people are camping, they should make sure keys are stashed away and not drive while impaired.
It comes as Perth County OPP have laid impaired driving charges against a man from Cambridge after an incident at a campground in West Perth.
Police say it happened on Friday, July 11, when officers were called to the campground about someone possibly driving while impaired in the area.
Responding officers were able to stop the vehicle and speak with the two people inside, but the passenger then reportedly assaulted both responding officers, then both took off on foot away from the vehicle.
According to police, the two didn’t make it far, with both being arrested on scene.
As a result, both are facing a list of charges, with the 45-year-old man from Cambridge, who was driving the vehicle, having been charged with:
- Operation While Impaired
- Failure or Refusal to Comply with Demand
- Resist Peace Officer
- Failure to Comply with Undertaking
- Failure to Stop for Police – Contrary to the Highway Traffic Act
The 37-year-old passenger in the vehicle, from St. Mary’s, has been charged with:
- Assault Peace Officer with a Weapon
- Assault Peace Officer – Two Counts
- Resist Peace Officer
Both were held in custody, but have since been released. A court date is now scheduled for August 11.
