New pilot project aims to make region’s roundabouts safer

The Region of Waterloo is launching a pilot program it hopes will make roundabout crosswalks safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

The program will see enhancements made at three specific roundabout crosswalks that have been identified as having high pedestrian volume, a history of collisions, have multiple lanes as well as where they are located in the Region.

The intersections in question include:

  • Franklin Boulevard and Bishop Street North, Cambridge. New button-activated flashing lights are being installed.
  • Homer Watson Boulevard and Block Line Road, Kitchener. Raised sidewalks will be put in.
  • Erb Street West and Ira Needles Boulevard, Waterloo. Both button activated flashing lights and raised sidewalks are being installed.

In a press release, Colleen James, Chair of Sustainability, Infrastructure and Development with the Region of Waterloo, said, “These enhancements are designed to safeguard our most vulnerable road users while aligning with our climate and growth goals. We look forward to receiving feedback from the community on these initiatives, as it will be crucial in guiding future decisions about roundabout construction and retrofits.”

Construction is expected to begin later this month.

The release said a survey will be available at EngageWR after construction is completed, looking to gather feedback about the enhancements.

Regional Council will be given a report with recommendations in 2026.
