Region investing nearly $3M in road safety improvements, roundabout project

The Region of Waterloo is investing in safer roundabouts and township roads.

On Wednesday, regional council approved a list of projects that will begin construction in July and are set to conclude in September.

Improvements are on the way for the intersection of Kossuth Road and Chilligo Road in Woolwich Township. The intersection has been the site of annual dangerous collisions, including one that sent two people to hospital in December.

To improve the intersection, crews will add opposing left-turn lanes to Kossuth Road.

The region is also introducing a pilot project aimed at improving the safety of roundabouts by adding raised crosswalks and flashing lights to select intersections.

The intersection of Ira Needles Boulevard, Erbsville Road, and Erb Street in Waterloo will be equipped with raised crosswalks and flashing lights.

In Kitchener, the roundabout at Homer Watson Boulevard and Block Line Road will be getting raised crosswalks. In Cambridge, flashing lights will be installed at the roundabout at Franklin Boulevard and Bishop Street.

As a part of this project, regional staff met with representatives from the Kitchener and Waterloo Fire Departments as well as the Region’s Paramedic Services, who gave unanimous support.

According to the report, staff will ask for public input on how the changes affect the roundabouts, and will form future considerations in part based on that feedback.

The region will also be adding a multi-use path to Strasburg Road between Ottawa Street and the newly constructed Highway 7/8 pedestrian bridge.

In total, this project will cost just under $2.8 million, with $1.1 million being moved from the 2026 and 2027 budgets to accommodate a shortfall in 2025.
