Residents in the City of Guelph will need to be a little more mindful when keeping their lawns green and pristine, as the Royal City has moved to the “level 1 yellow” stage of its Outside Water Use Program.
Citing concerns over recent dry weather and rising temperatures, a release from the city said the change in watering restrictions is required to keep up with water demands, particularly during peak use times.
“Guelph is a groundwater community. Groundwater comes from rain and melted snow that seeps into open spaces and cracks in soil and rock,” reads that release. “Guelph’s water supply is limited and is greatly dependent on local precipitation, which is why the City promotes responsible and efficient outdoor and indoor water use at all times.”
Under current level 1 restrictions, rolled out on Thursday, lawn watering is still permitted between the hours of 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Furthermore, street addresses with even numbers are only permitted on even-numbered calendar days. Odd street numbers may only water their lawns on odd calendar days.
If it’s your vehicle that you’re looking to maintain instead, city staff note that car washing is still permitted under current restrictions with a shut-off nozzle on your outdoor water hose. Sprinkler use is also permitted for children’s recreational use if you’re looking for classic ways to help keep the kids cool and entertained.
City of Guelph bylaw officers will be actively enforcing the water restrictions, with the power to issue fines up to $350 or even court summons for infractions.
