When and where you can use fireworks during Canada Day in Waterloo Region

As municipalities around Waterloo Region prepare to celebrate Canada Day, reminders are being sent out about fireworks.

In Kitchener, fireworks are only permitted on Canada Day between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. and only on private property. Fireworks are not allowed to be set off in city-owned areas, such as school yards, parks, and roadways. Only those 18 years and older can use them, and all fireworks must also be set off at least 25 feet away from any structure or building. Fines for not obeying the bylaw start at $1,500.

In Waterloo, fireworks are also only allowed between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. and are only allowed during Canada Day, Victoria Day, Diwali or Deepavali and the Lunar New Year. Fines for not following the bylaw or the times can result in fines starting at $1,000 for a first offense and $2,000 for a second.

In Cambridge, fireworks can be set off between dusk and 11 p.m. on private property and are not permitted on public roadways or parks.

Starting in 2026, the sale of fireworks will be banned in both Kitchener and Waterloo.

Some tips include having a bucket of water nearby for used fireworks, do not try to relight a firework that doesn’t go off, do not use in windy conditions and keep them away from combustible materials such as dry grass or trees.
