WRPS launches eighth annual Backpack Challenge

The eighth annual Backpack Challenge is back, and is encouraging members of the public and businesses to donate new backpacks, school supplies, lunch bags or gift cards that will be given to children and families in need across Waterloo Region.

It’s an annual tradition held by Waterloo Regional Police to hep kids and families in the community.

According to the service, over 22,500 backpacks have been collected over the last seven years, including through more than 20 child and youth organizations across the region.

“The generosity of the community never fails to inspire us,” Waterloo Regional Police Chief Mark Crowell said in a press release. “By working together, we can ensure that every child in Waterloo Region starts the school year with the tools they need to succeed.”

The Backpack Challenge runs until August 12, and donations can be dropped off at the following locations:

  • Headquarters, 200 Maple Grove Rd., Cambridge
  • North Division, 45 Columbia St. E., Waterloo
  • Central Division, 200 Frederick St., Kitchener
  • South Division, 176 Hespeler Rd., Cambridge

More information for those looking to register to get a bag will be available starting August 1.
