Construction begins on public-Catholic elementary school in Cambridge

Hundreds of elementary students from both the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) and Waterloo Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) will be going to school in a new building next year.

Shovels are officially in the ground for the unique new school planned for 605 Wesley Blvd. in southeast Galt.

The building is set to be classroom-ready by September 2026.

It’s also a one-of-a-kind project, with students from two school boards in Waterloo Region.

The Catholic and public school boards combined resources to create the first joint-use elementary school in the region.

“This groundbreaking marks more than the beginning of a new school building — it represents a commitment to collaboration, innovation, and the future of education in Cambridge,” said Scott Miller, Director of Education for the WRDSB.

“Together with our partners at the WCDSB, we are creating a space where students will thrive, families will feel welcomed, and our community will grow stronger.”

Tyrone Dowling, Director of Education for the Waterloo Catholic District School Board noted, “This project reflects our shared hope for the future—and our belief, grounded in faith, that when we come together, we can build learning spaces where every student feels a deep sense of belonging, purpose, and possibility.”

The school will have shared gymnasiums and library spaces as well as a purpose-built child care centre with 88 spaces.

In the spirit of collaboration, a steel truss will be featured at the main entrance, inspired by bridges over the Grand River.

“The truss symbolizes the connection between the two school boards and reflects the local architectural heritage,” reads a release.

In total, the school will be home to nearly 900 students, 519 from the WRDSB and 354 from the WCDSB.

During construction, the naming process for the school will begin.
