Waterloo Region almost a Conservative sweep: Election 2025

While the federal Liberals were able to hold on to the prime minister’s office, there was a noticeable shift in the political leanings in Waterloo Region.

Two Liberal MP’s lost their seats, as did one of only two Green MPs.

The tightest race in the region was seen in Kitchener—Conestoga where Liberal incumbent Tim Louis had a slim win over Conservative Doug Treleaven. That riding was one of the more interesting to watch because it includes a large urban base and encompasses the rural townships of Wellesley, Wilmot and Woolwich.

Around 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, Elections Canada released the final counts for the riding, noting Louis retained the seat by a margin of 522 votes.

Results show that 73.9 per cent of eligible voters cast their ballot in the riding.

Another interesting development was the flip of the Kitchener Center seat from the Green’s Mike Morrice to Conservative Kelly DeRidder. It too was a close race with less than one percentage point separating DeRidder and Morrice. A spokesperson for the Morrice campaign told 570 NewsRadio there are a number of ballots left to be counted in the riding, including some special ballots, so there is a slight chance the results there could change.

Over in Cambridge, Conservative Connie Cody was able to hold off incumbent Bryan May by over 1,500 votes. Nearly 70 per cent of registered electors voted in Cambridge.

Kitchener South-Hespeler was another red seat that flipped blue. Matt Strauss defeated incumbent Valerie Bradford. Voter turnout in that riding was also just shy of 70 per cent.

The final race in the region wasn’t even close. Liberal incumbent Bardish Chagger cruised to her fourth straight election victory in Waterloo. She outpaced her nearest opponent by over 17,000 votes. There were 72.3 per cent of registered voters who turned out.

The latest data from Elections Canada shows an average of 70.6 per cent of registered voters in Waterloo Region cast a ballot in the federal election.
