WRDSB leaving ‘X’, cites safety concerns with social media platform

No more ‘X’ posts for the local public school board as of Friday.

The Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) says it’s leaving the social media platform as of April 25, for several reasons, including student safety.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the WRDSB said, “due to the application of policies, changes in community safety features and use of artificial intelligence (AI) on the Twitter/X platform, WRDSB is no longer using X/Twitter as a communication channel.”

That statement goes on to say the WRDSB’s priority is the “safety and well-being of our students, staff, families and caregivers, as well as fostering a community of belonging and support for students.”

The ‘@WRDSB‘ X account will remain active for now, but only to redirect users to other channels of communication. No new content will be available on that platform.

The account itself has been active since August 2009, with nearly 75,000 followers.

The WRDSB said it is “always assessing the value of the channels” it uses and will continue to post on other social media outlets such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Threads, YouTube and on the board website.
