Another Good Friday revival for Sonny’s fish and chips at Morty’s Pub

By Erin Anderson

It’s take two for a tasty collaboration as Sonny’s is getting another Good Friday revival.

The beloved Waterloo drive-in closed its doors in 2022 but last year the former owner, Paul Noussis, partnered with Morty’s Pub to bring back a fan favourite.

Sonny’s iconic fish and chips used to lead to long line-ups each and every Good Friday. It’s a tradition Jay Taylor, the owner of Morty’s, wanted to keep going.

“Our goal is to keep the integrity and quality of the product — make it like was, like it always was,” said Taylor.

One thing they did not want to see again was those big lines, so they opted for advanced orders.

“We want people to order online, pick your time, come in – here’s your stuff, and go,” explained Taylor. “I think last year the longest someone might have waited was five minutes.”

Both Taylor and Noussis were on The Mike Farwell Show on Monday and said there was a great turnout in 2024. In fact, Noussis said they served over 2,000 pieces of fish.

“He saw fish in his sleep,” joked Taylor.

The pair have upped the inventory this year but they’re still expecting to sell out.

“This year we will also have a pop stand selling ice cream you can enjoy while you wait,” read a social media post from Morty’s.

The pub will be selling fish and chips exclusively on Good Friday, but you can return on the weekend to enjoy their KW famous wings and other staples.
