Two arrests made following attempted vehicle theft in Cambridge

Regional police have arrested two men in connection with two attempts to steal vehicles in the city of Cambridge

Police completed a search warrant on April 2 in both the city of Toronto and the city of Pickering and were able to recover a stolen BMW, $8,000 in cash, and other related property.

A 26-year-old from Pickering and a 23-year-old from Toronto were arrested and face two counts of attempted vehicle motor theft.

Some things you can do to help prevent the theft of your vehicle

  • Block access to the onboard diagnostic port to prevent thieves from reprogramming the vehicle’s key fob or purchase an aftermarket immobilizer.
  • Use a steering wheel locking device to deter theft.
  • When not in use, place the vehicle key fob inside a radio frequency shielding bag/pouch to block cell signals.
  • Consider equipping your vehicle with an aftermarket Global Positioning System (GPS) tracker, as organized groups can easily defeat onboard manufacturing tracking. The tracker may assist police in locating the vehicle and/or suspects.
  • Consider installing a wired camera system and an audible alarm, as subjects are known to carry devices that can jam wireless cameras.
  • Ensure all keys are accounted for and never left in the vehicle or unattended.
  • Those looking to purchase a vehicle can also visit the Équité Association website (www.equiteassociation.com) to view a list of the top 10 most stolen vehicles.
  • If you believe you are being followed in your vehicle, contact the Police to report the behavior or attend the closest Police station.
  • If you observe suspicious people in your neighbourhood looking into vehicles, contact the police immediately. This will assist investigators in tracking patterns of criminal behaviour and potentially identifying suspects.

In addition to those charges, the Toronto man has also been charged with a carjacking incident that happened in Oakville.

For that, he’s facing multiple charges, including robbery with violence, motor vehicle theft with violence, and possession of stolen goods over $5000.
