The Region of Waterloo Public Health said 1,624 elementary students were not in class Tuesday due to out-of-date immunization records.
Back in February, nearly 9,000 suspension orders were sent out to elementary school students in Waterloo Region, warning of the April 2 deadline.
As of two-weeks ago, 5,522 students were still on that list.
Public health officials stressed that staying up-to-date with immunization records is especially important right now with the increase in measles cases in not only Waterloo Region, but across southern Ontario as well.
“With a confirmed case of measles in Waterloo Region and active measles outbreaks in surrounding health units in southwestern Ontario, enforcement of the Immunization for School Pupils Act is vital to ensure students are up to date with vaccines,” said Dr. Wang, Medical Officer of Health.
Under the Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA), all elementary and secondary school students are required to have proof of numerous vaccinations or a valid exemption on file with Public Health.
Elementary students who were suspended Tuesday will not be allowed back in the classroom until their records have been resolved or updated.
