Guelph man charged with attempted murder after beating elderly neighbour with a shovel

A man in Guelph is facing charges of attempted murder after “repeatedly striking” his neighbour with a shovel on Tuesday morning.

According to Guelph Police, the incident took place at a home near Woodlawn Road East and Inverness Drive at around 7 a.m.

The accused damaged his 70-year-old neighbour’s fence, made his way into the backyard, took a shovel from the shed and smashed the patio door to gain entry to the house.

When inside, he began striking his neighbour in the face and head with the shovel. Officers arrived as the assault was still happening and intervened to place the man wielding the shovel under arrest.

The victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries to his face.

The 34-year-old Guelph man was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, assault to resist arrest, break and enter and mischief.

According to police, the two men had never met or had any prior involvement with each other before this attack.
