25,000 Easter eggs set to fly in Cambridge next month

Those of a certain vintage might be reminded of a certain episode of WKRP in Cincinnati, however, this event will have a much better outcome.

The City of Cambridge has partnered with ECU – A Division of WFCU Credit Union to present the Egg Drop on April 12.

It’s a first of its kind event for Waterloo Region with 25,000 colourful plastic Easter eggs, dropped from a helicopter onto the field at the Fountain Street Soccer Complex.

Beth Ann Prince, manager of community investment at WFCU Credit Union was a guest on The Mike Farwell Show and said after the eggs touch down, that’s when the scramble begins.

“They (the kids) go out there and collect the eggs and the field is empty in a matter of minutes. It’s so exciting to see,” said Prince. “There’s always special guests like the bunny and some princesses and a magician. It’s just an exciting morning.”

The kids then exchange the eggs for chocolates and other Easter goodies.

Prince said WFCU hosting a similar egg drop in Windsor, Ont. in years past and it was a huge success. She said community outreach and engagement is a priority for the company.

“It’s very busy and very exciting and is very fulfilling seeing the positive impact on the community. And, of course, any time we do things with young people it’s always great to see that they’re our future and if we want to make an impact.”

Prince said there were originally 800 registration spots available but they filled very quickly so a waitlist has been created, in case someone cancels.
