The new Kitchener Indoor Recreation Complex in development got a large funding boost this weekend from the Federal government, which is helping the city construct a multi-use gymnasium.
The highest-tier government is adding another $2 million, this time coming out of the Green and Inclusive Community Building’s Fund.
The gymnasium features four multipurpose courts, 40-foot ceilings, and competition-level flooring.
Kitchener’s Mayor said it will help position the city as a top destination for competitive sports.
“The addition of a gymnasium to the Kitchener indoor recreation complex solidifies its status as a game-changer for our city, making it a true investment in our community’s well-being and future,” said Mayor Berry Vrbanovic in a press release.
A previous $9.7 million commitment from the government came out of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program for the upcoming recreation complex. The funding boost announced March 22, will help the city construct the 33,800-square-foot gymnasium.
The Kitchener Indoor Recreation Complex is slated to open summer 2026.
