Meeting between region and outside workers on strike

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

A meeting took place between the Region of Waterloo and CUPE Local 1656.

The union represents about 150 outside workers who have been on strike since Monday.

The labour action began after negotiations failed last weekend. Picket lines quickly popped up, including outside the Region of Waterloo International Airport in Breslau.

The airport picket prompted the Region of Waterloo to issue a warning about potential traffic delays in the area.

Police charged two drivers who allegedly struck picketers with their vehicles. Those incidents happened about 12 hours apart Monday night and Tuesday morning. No injuries were sustained.

CUPE has said one of the big bargaining issues is wages. The Region of Waterloo maintains that it is committed to reaching a fair agreement that is competitive for workers and affordable for residents.
