Woman’s wallet stolen using distraction theft tactic, police warn

A woman was targeted by thieves using a distraction tactic to take her wallet, police believe.

Waterloo Regional Police Services (WRPS) are investigating after a theft took place on Feb. 19. The incident happened just after 12:45 p.m. in the area of Ottawa Street North and River Road East.

The victim was loading bags into her vehicle when she was approached by an unknown man who was telling her something was wrong with her rear tire. At that time another man approached the car from the opposite side and stole a wallet from inside her purse in the backseat.

Police also say a third man was involved as the lookout sitting in a red truck parked nearby.

Officers believe she was intentionally targeted while checking out at the store to get her banking card information.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 519-570-9777.

Officials say there are a number of things people can do to prevent distraction thefts:

  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Shield your PIN when you make a purchase or cash withdrawal at an ATM
  • Pay close attention to your property if someone appears suspicious and randomly tries to engage in a conversation
  • If someone is crowding you in a checkout line, don’t be afraid to ask them to respect your space
  • If you are unnecessarily bumped or crowded, be aware that a distraction theft might be occurring and check your valuables
  • Keep personal items within your eyesight while shopping, and do not leave any items unattended
  • Be cautious if someone offers to help you bag or carry items you have purchased
  • Report any suspicious activity to police
