Guelph set to welcome 28 transitional housing units in new facility

By Justin Koehler

A new transitional housing facility is on the way to the City of Guelph in the coming weeks, working to bridge the gap between homelessness and permanent housing options.

The new 28-unit facility at 65 Delhi St. will be opening its doors before the end of February, set to be owned by the County of Wellington and be run by Thresholds Homes and Supports. It is contributing to the 108 total transitional units that have been developed over the past year.

“For communities like ours, with low vacancy rates and a lack of affordable housing, a dedicated Transitional Housing with Supports project would provide a much-needed option to better support individuals in their journey to being permanently housed,” the County of Wellington’s statement reads on its website.

The county says the location provides important access to public transit options, community-based services, and possible job opportunities for the homeless population in the city.

“Research demonstrates that, without a Transitional Housing with Supports option, individuals waiting for permanent housing can become discouraged and disengage from service,” said the county.

Tenants for the 28 units will be taken on a priority basis, according to the county, saying it will focus on those who need them the most. The full details for the latest development can be found on the County of Wellington website.
