Love is Blind star stops in Waterloo Region, promoting self-love for Valentine’s Day

A reality TV star that became famous for choosing herself at the alter on the Netflix show Love is Blind came to the region right before Valentine’s Day.

Deepti Vempati is spreading the message of the importance of self-love and self-care, after her stint on the show sparked her to write a book called, I Choose Myself.

“Those three words that I said at the altar were just the starting point to realizing how much work I had to put in because I ultimately let someone else dictate my self-worth,” Vempati said in an interview.

The snowfall the region is getting this week froze Vempati’s plans to speak to students at Conestoga College Feb. 12. CityNews Kitchener caught up with her instead.

She came to the college with a plan to share experiences she learned, promote self-love and give advice she wishes she could have given to herself in her twenties.

“You do not have to adhere to society’s pressures, and you don’t have to be on this timeline that everyone else is on, you just have to continue on your own self journey,” which Vempati said starts with self-love.

She’s been stunned by the outpouring of support she has received from being on Love is Blind and people seeing her pick herself.

“There were so many women who reached out to me who said they’ve left their abusive relationships; they’ve steered in a different direction because of what I said. I realize that I had more of a story to tell.”

Her ex, Shake, from the season now appears on a different reality TV show called House of Villains and Vempati has watched it. She was happy to see him embrace the role, adding he might be playing a villain character but some of it is possibly just his personality.

Vempati thinks he maybe was playing a villain on Love is Blind and hopes he’s grown from re-watching the episodes but added they don’t speak because “it’s not her energy anymore.”

During her stint on the show, Vempati said she realized she was giving her power up and wanted to exude her own confidence without having external validation.

“As hard as it was to go through that, I think I learned more about myself and gained so many beautiful friendships from it that I don’t regret doing it at all.”

In her book she talks about reconnecting with herself after the show, adding she found deeper self-love, and has helped build a community of people with similar experiences. Vempati said anyone looking to read a raw, honest story should pick it up.

“That’s kind of the premise of the book, its not like we don’t face obstacles, we obviously do all the time throughout life its how you deal with it and having the confidence to know whatever the outcome is your going to be okay,” said Vempati.

She was a bit conflicted when asked if she recommends someone else going on the popular show, saying they must have the emotional capacity because the internet is not always a kind place.

“I think season one was the purest season and now we’re almost at season eight, it airs in a couple days, I think there is going to be more people that come on with bad intentions,” added Vempati.

She currently hosts a podcast called Out of the Pods with her Love is Blind co-star where they promote not only self-love but women empowerment.

When asked if she would return to reality TV, Vempati said she possibly would but doesn’t want to appear on another show focused on finding a partner.

“Everything happens for a reason.”
