In all the recorded weather data captured at the E.D. Soulis Weather Station at the University of Waterloo over the last century, the year 2024 stands out.
2024 was the hottest year ever recorded at the weather station, with the average temperature over the year coming in at 9.45 C, beating a record of 9.32 recorded back in 2012.
Every month, with the exception of August, was warmer than the average recorded temperature.
The hottest day of the year came on the last day of Spring. Temperatures recorded on June 19 reached highs of 33.9 C.
The warm weather was a bonus for crops, as temperatures above the freezing point stretched the growing season out to 173 days, nearly two weeks longer than the average of 160 days.
On top of being warm, 2024 was also particularly dry. The total snowfall for the 2023/2024 winter was just 71 cm, well below the average of 159.7 cm.
